Rock Dog, movie review

This movie had some very surprising aspects to it. The opening scenes are very Samaria-ish, giving it a Kung Fu Panda and Samaria Jack feel. Several different cultures are represented, with the evil wolves going from 20’s gangsters to Cold Era Russians. In the city, it seemed a mash up of New York, Nashville and maybe even Tokyo.

Aside from the settings, the plot of the movie is much more thought out than the trailers explain. The ongoing humor is mostly based on the main character, Bodi, being na├»ve and gullible due to his sheltered life, and then there’s dim witted animals, like the sheep, who just have a low IQ and memory problems, but still come off as sweet and something you want to protect.

The part I was the most surprised with was the addition of superpowers. In the opening scene I figured it was just an exaggerated legend, but it turned out to be a bit of magic, the only real magic in an otherwise scientific world, which was a bit odd, but they managed to make it work. It did leave me wondering why no one else had powers, and where the rest of the dogs were. No background story was given as to the origin of Bodi’s family. Hopefully there will be a sequel to explain it, since this movie was definitely good enough to earn a sequel.

So this movie gets a thumbs up as one of the best animated movies I’ve seen in a while, both adults and children are likely to enjoy it.
